What is the central idea of your concentration?
My concentration focuses on the exploration and portrayal of uncanny sensations of the body, of which I personally experience, by expressing them in unique ways. As seen in my artwork, I describe such feelings mostly through inanimate objects, such as bubbles, poles, concrete, washer machines, ink, and so on. I aim to capture the sense of these feelings by giving them physical form and embodying them through my illustrations. My concentration focuses on being realistic in the human aspect, and surreal at the same time. It is not to be taken literally, but to be interpreted, as every piece represents something. I constantly incorporate aspects of delicacy, soft colors and tones, and femininity as themes in my work. My technique is very detailed to contribute towards the depth and surrealism of each piece.
How does the work in your concentration demonstrate exploration of your idea?
As demonstrated throughout my work, I have experimented with different mediums, techniques, and concepts. In the progression of my pieces, I have explored my medium by migrating from oil paints to digital paints. By doing digital paintings, I am able to achieve much more detail, precision, and time efficiency within my artwork. Also, by completing my digital paintings in Photoshop, I am able to play with and better develop color schemes. Through the colors in each piece, I try to depict realistic figures with very light, soft tones contrasting with dark elements to reflect my emotions associated with certain bodily feelings. Furthermore, as I continued with my concentration, I adopted new techniques which enhance my work. I have incorporated much more detail in my illustrations to add to the surrealism and depth of it. In addition, I have grown in developing my background. In my first piece, I was unsure of what I wanted to do with the background, and settled on a sky. Also, as seen in my second, fourth, and seventh pieces, there is no background. As I progressed, my recent pieces have a lot more symbolism, meaning, and context in their background. For example, in my third and sixth pieces show a much more detailed, developed background. In my work, I have explored the demonstration of my ideas on how I decide to interpret and illustrate the sensations. In regards to how I represent them, my interpretation is usually the very first thoughts that run through my head. Most of my artwork is based on past experiences with these feelings. Many of the objects I use to portray the sensations share similar characteristics with each other. I try to avoid over-analyzing or overdeveloping these ideas. I encourage the viewer to interpret my artwork, and the feelings it describes, for themselves, in an effort to make it more sensible and personal to them.
